Inspire & influence

World Vision Australia works to show Australians how poverty affects people’s lives; how it denies their most basic human rights to freedom from hunger, disease, violence and exploitation.

We work to educate people about the underlying causes of poverty and encourage Australians to become involved in the fight against poverty.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the issues facing the world. But you can make a world of difference, simply by speaking up.

Educate yourself and others

Subscribe to Action News Online to get our latest campaign news. Keep informed about current issues and actions you can take that helps fight poverty.

Your voice is most powerful with family and friends. Talk to them about world issues and how they can take action. Let them know what you’ve learned and ask them to add their voice to the fight to end poverty.

Campaigning creates change

Join Don’t Trade Lives, an advocacy campaign aimed at uniting Australians against human trafficking and slavery. Create change by asking governments to strengthen anti-trafficking policies and encouraging businesses to make changes to help eradicate child labour.

World Vision understands how the health of mothers and children can be improved through simple, affordable and achievable means. Get involved in the Child Health Now campaign and help bring an end to preventable child deaths in the world’s poorest countries.

The Make Poverty History coalition, which includes World Vision, is an international alliance of non-government organisations and community groups advocating solutions to the factors creating and sustaining global poverty for billions around the world. Order a white band today.

Support Micah Challenge, a global Christian campaign urging world leaders to fulfil their promise to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

Make your voice heard

Today’s media and politics are governed by the voice of the people.  Politicians represent you. And newspapers, radio and other media are only successful because you support them. Ask them to report on what’s important to you.

Put poverty on the political and media agenda – write to your Member of Parliament or local representative. Email newspaper opinion pages and call your local radio station.

Tips for writing or calling
  • Be brief: a short statement is a powerful one. 2-4 paragraphs are enough.
  • Be clear: what do you want to say? What answers/action do you want?
  • Identify yourself: include your name and contact details. It lets people know you’re serious.
  • Be kind: a polite letter/email is more likely to be read and listened to than an aggressive one.
  • Use your voice: this is your passion, so put it in your words!
  • Ask for action: asking questions and requesting action compels a response and opens the conversation.
  • Be appropriate: make sure your message reaches the right audience. Don’t call a gardening show to discuss world poverty.
  • Keep track of what you’ve done: keep copies of any letters, emails or phone calls you’ve made.
  • Let others know what you’ve done: forward your emails and published letters to friends and family. Share your voice and show them how easy it is to share theirs.

It’s your choice: money talks

Like a bargain? So too do some manufacturers. A big part of why we’re able to enjoy cheap services and commodities is – tragically – because human beings in poorer countries have been reduced to commodities themselves.
