The countdown is on! What are you giving up?

The 40 Hour Famine is a youth movement like no other. Not only do you get to raise much-needed funds for the world’s hungry, you also get to spread an important message to everyone you know – now is the time to end global hunger. What could be better than that?

Here at 40 Hour Famine HQ, we’re getting pretty excited about the big weekend. And we’ve had some fantastic input from our online supporters so far!

A few people have asked us why we give something up for 40 hours as well as donate money. The answer is simple. Giving up something that you love for 40 hours helps you gain an understanding of what it would be like to go without. It’s a chance to do something real while talking to your friends and family about the billion people worldwide who are chronically hungry.

But don’t just take our word for it, here’s what one of our Facebook supporters Ari has to say:

“The 40 Hour Famine is about giving up something you love for 40 hours. It doesn't have to be food and it doesn't pretend to represent even a fraction of what it is that people in developing countries like Ethiopia have to face every day. It is about raising money and awareness around a country where 70% are living in some form of poverty.”

Another of our Facebook supporters Mandy agrees:

“Going without whatever you choose is merely symbolic, and more importantly it raises awareness by creating interest. Everyone who participates is a hero and displays empathy for others – you can do the famine even if you have little or no money, and don't forget it's not just about hunger, World Vision help out in other areas like education, health for mums and babies, reducing infant mortality from preventable illnesses and employment. Keep up the good work.”

We couldn't have put it better ourselves.

So here’s your chance. Together we can do something real to fight hunger. Register now to do the 40 Hour Famine.

I'm excited!! And while giving money is obviously important, I think it's just as important that we can do something to bring about discussion on poverty. Bring it on :)

I'm giving up food to realise how the kids in ethiopia live. People need to realise how lucky they are with three meals a day when ethiopian kids only get 1-2. We're also lucky because our parents live on atleast 1000 times as much money a month then ethiopian families do!!

I am so excited. This year is my first 40 hour famine, and I couldn't be any more excited.  I'm giving up food, technology, and all furniture. This is going to be a challenge, but in the end, it's going to be worth it. I'm just so excited in knowing that by doing this and raising money, I will be helping change somebody's future. It's sad that these people live like they do....it's life's cruel joke, but I think I speak for everyone when I say that it's time to break the global hunger cycle, and give these children and older people the chance at life they deserve.

We are ALL capable of making a difference.

Global hunger, you had better start runnin' while you can, coz we're going to take you down!

    Let's do this!!!!

Thanks for the advice, Carla, it'll really help my 2 friends who've accidentally forgotten their usernames ;) I'm giving up Talking for the 40 Hour Famine, and so far I've raised $54.00 lolz. I'm going to try and raise $125, to challenge myself and fight global hunger!!!! I luv doing this, I've done this 2 times before.

P.S. Carla? if u could help me on one thing- I accidentally created two Famine profiles, this one as a Group member and another one as an individual. How can I delete my individual participant profile?? HELP!!!

Hi!!! I'm doing this for the third time, first time I gave up food but for only 8 hours because I was too young and then I gave up Talking, Food and technology but this year I am giving up talking and furniture because I want to tell everyone about the 40 hour famine online! I absolutely can't wait to do it knowing that I am helping so many lives, last year I raised about $650 with my neighbour and so this year our target is $1000 and we are already half way!!! Love this idea and I can't wait to do it next year!
