40 hour Famine. Do Something Real! 15-17 August 2008

Child Rights

Food, Education, Play, & Love

Children are special. They depend on their parents for food, education and love, and because they are vulnerable they have special rights. Thanks to the United Nations there is now an internationally-recognised Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

The four pillars of child rights

All children have the right to:
  • Food, clothes and shelter
  • Education
  • Play, leisure and freedom
  • Love, family and protection

Child labour, trafficking and slavery denies children their basic rights

When children have to work they don't go to school, which means they have no way to escape the poverty trap and get a better-paid job when they grow up. It also means that mostly they have no time to play (like all children should!), and they are often physically and mentally harmed. When children are taken away from their families they are also separated from the love and protection of their family and are vulnerable to abuse.

The 40 Hour Famine is a community education and fundraising initiative of World Vision Australia.
