Churches and the 40 Hour Famine

Churches are passionate about caring for the poor and connecting with their community. Last year, almost 900 churches signed up for the 40 Hour Famine. They followed Jesus’ example and did something real to fight poverty.

How can you help in 2012? Why not:

  • Sign up your church to do the 40 Hour Famine
  • Start a Famine Village in your local area - and get the whole community involved!
  • Host a Party with a Purpose

Start a Famine Village

The Famine Village enables local churches, businesses, schools, the local council and the whole community to come together and do something real to fight hunger. A Famine Village gives individuals of all ages an opportunity to experience what it is like to go without something that really matters to them, so that they can help change someone else’s life for the better.

Who can be involved?

Everyone in your community is invited.

When will it happen?

40 Hour Famine weekend: 17-19 August 2012

Where will it happen?

In YOUR local community.

We’ve got lots of helpful tools on our Resources page to assist you in organising events leading up to the 40 Hour Famine weekend! These include:

  • Famine Village flyers, banners and posters
  • Tips on how to get media attention for your 40 Hour Famine
  • Media release templates

How to spread the word about your Famine Village

  • Visit local schools and businesses and encourage them to come on board.
  • Visit the local council, introduce the idea of a Famine Village and ask for their support.
  • Develop a plan about how you can work with existing local activities such as farmers’ markets, concerts and school events to build momentum and education about the 40 Hour Famine.
  • Book a venue for any large events or activities – or develop a partnership with a local major event.
  • Engage with your local media about the concept of the Famine Village and share information about 40 Hour Famine.

Throw a Party with a Purpose!

A Party with a Purpose is a local response to the issue of global hunger. Our goal is to see groups from our local community host a social event in their home with their own group of family and friends. It could be a BBQ, pizza night, mums’ morning tea, dinner party or just a get-together for school parents.

How do I host a Party with a Purpose?

During your party, take 10 minutes to do three things:

Show...a short video. We suggest:

Watch both of these clips and choose the one that is most suitable for the group of people that you’ll be inviting to your party.

Share...why you have chosen to personally support this cause. This is your story – it doesn’t have to be long, but your party will have more impact if you share your motivation.

Invite...your family and friends to support the cause by donating generously on the spot, doing the 40 Hour Famine – or even hosting their own Party with a Purpose!
