Churches join forces with schools and businesses to tackle the 40 Hour Famine

40 Hour Famine : Cross from a rearview mirrorAround Australia, churches are joining forces with schools and businesses in their community to take on the 40 Hour Famine and the Global Food Crisis.

If you’ve been keeping an eye on our Leaderboard, you’ll note that many of the top Group fundraisers (at this stage at least) have been churches.

We have some awesome staff at World Vision who work with church leaders to come up with new ideas about how to take the 40 Hour Famine campaign and make it 'local'. This has included everything from tailored group work sheets and simulations (which we've added to our Downloads page) to some of the crazy ideas you see below.

Here are a few shining lights from each state ...

40 Hour Famine : Monavale Anglican ChurchNew South Wales : Monavale Anglican Church
Monavale Anglican church has decided to go big with the 40 Hour Famine this year.

How big? 250 familes each giving $400.
Sounds overly ambitious right?

They may have thought so too, until their first two families gave above and beyond with $11,000 between them! Now for the other 248 families...

South Australia - Blackwood

Blackwood Hills Baptist and Blackwood Church of Christ were our very first two Famine Village churches with a huge impact in 2009.

Now, they’re innovating again by encouraging people to run a ‘Party with a Purpose’.
The idea is that people sign-up to run a "Party", where they tell family and friends why they are involved in the 40 Hour Famine, about the Global Food Crisis and invite them to join in.

They set the goal at 50 and have had over 100 registered Parties so far!

40 Hour Famine : Cornerstone ACC & New Hope BrisbaneQueensland – Cornerstone ACC & New Hope Brisbane
Cornerstone ACC and NewHope Brisbane have teamed up create a Famine Village in Brisbane.

They’ve been out and about have found support for World Vision in all sorts of places.
Excitement is building around a fantastic event they’re planning for Sunday afternoon to celebrate the finish of the 40 Hour Famine.

Victoria – The Ballarat Project

The Ballarat Project is an idea developed by a group of young people in one of Victoria’s largest regional cities: Ballarat.

Five churches, six schools and other community groups have come together to support each other and to equip their young people to do something really incredible through the 40 Hour Famine.

They’ve even set-up their own website: http://www.theballaratproject.com.au/

40 Hour Famine : Kalamunda HillsWestern Australia -  Kalamunda Hills
Kalamunda Hills Church of Christ are having a crack at partnering with other local churches to get their community engaged and fired up about the Global Food Crisis and the 40 Hour Famine.
Momentum is really building for a Chamber of Commerce brekky for local businesses and they’ll also be at their Farmers Market drumming up awareness.

So, if are you doing the 40 Hour Famine with your church, we’d love to hear about the ways you’re tackling it.
