What R U giving up?

What are you giving up?Tell us: what are you hungry for?

So. You want to do the 40 Hour Famine and experience what it’s like to go without... You’re prepared to spend 40 hours not doing/having something that you believe you need and/or love, just to see how hungry that makes you... You're prepared to get hungry for change.

The question is: What R U giving up? Because, food isn’t the only thing you have an appetite for.

You can choose to go without anything you like. Why don’t you sacrifice – for just this limited time – something - anything - that you love. It will definitely help you to see what children around the world do without: every single day.

We’ve made a few suggestions below for what you could give up, but – WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Do these ideas appeal? Do you have something else in mind? Post a comment – let us know! We want to see what Australians in 2010 are prepared to get hungry for…

You could give up… FOOD

Do something really traditional. Go 40 hours without food. Go to bed hungry, wake up hungry, spend the weekend hungry. Get a taste of what it’s like for 1.1 billion people. Now, aren’t you hungry for change?

If you give up food, what will you miss most? Tell us here.

You could give up… FURNITURE

Do something really uncomfortable. Sit on the floor, sleep on the ground, eat standing up. Give it up in the classroom, at home, & when you’re out & about. You sure will like your bed when you get it back.

If you give up furniture, what will you miss most? Tell us here.

You could give up… TRANSPORT

Do something really hard on your feet... Forego the car, the bus, the tram, the train, your bike, your scooter, your skateboard. See how you go walking everywhere you need to get to. How long does it take?

If you give up transport, what will you miss most? Tell us here.

You could give up… the INTERNET

Do something really offline... Think you can spend the weekend without Facebook, MySpace, Google & Perez Hilton? Can you go off radar? Give it a go – we bet you’ll be surprised by how much you miss it.

If you give up your Internet access, what will you miss most? Tell us here.

You could give up… your MOBILE PHONE

Do something really disconnected. Give up your phone for the weekend. Stop texting, calling, surfing, app-ing, playing. Go without a clock & an alarm too. Now try & find your friends in a crowd.

If you give up your mobile phone, what will you miss most? Tell us here.

You could give up... SHOPPING

If you give up shopping, what will you miss most? Tell us here.

You could give up… VIDEO GAMES

Do something really, um, outdoorsy? If you switch your games off for the weekend, what will you do with your time? Turn off your Playstation, Wii & Xbox. Now, what else can you possibly find to do???

If you give up video games, what will you miss most? Tell us here.

I am thinking of doing the 40 hour famine, and I think i might give up: eating, nothing at all, furniture, no bed, chairs, tables etc I would have to either stand up or sit on the ground, walk every where, except for school and other long distance places, no shopping what so ever, I don't do much shopping any way... and games, and I was thinking of no t.v. Good luck everyone and hope you do well, and raise lots of money to help those in Kenya and the other place I forgot what it is... God Bless....!!!!!

  • Jerusha B :D 17 May

I think all the girls out there should give up bra's and undies like Me :D Many children in the poor countries don't even have them. So we should give ours up! Who's With me ?
  • Cat 17 May

im giving up everything except the clothes on my back, im heading to the streets with no money, no food, nothing... im going to survive 40hrs homeless, poor and lonely. im just lucky i only have to spend 40hrs like that...
  • Nige at 40 Hour Famine HQ 18 May

Wow, some really great suggestions here! I hope you all get stuck into raising money for our work overseas. I thought I should respond to the comment from: "@40 hour famine??? Dunno wat to do!" You should check out our tips for Staying Safe here on the website or consider giving up something other than food. This year, you can give up anything you like that is important to you - some of the suggestions on this page might help too. Best of luck and make sure you make sure you don't go without common sense! Cheers,
  • Ash 19 May

The that would hurt the most giving up would be my bed
  • Sonyia Juarez 21 May

I'm thinking of giving up technology talking and food... it'd be hard because the only thing that helped last yr when i gave up food was being distracted but if u cut everything out it'd be hard
  • Caroline 22 May

Last year i gave up furniture with my friends and this year i was thinking of giving up food, furniture, technology and my sight which will by very hard. It might be a bit to hard to do sight but I'll try my best! Good on everyone for doing the 40 Hour Famine!
  • Chellie 22 May

if you give up talking does that include communication via writing???
  • Nige at 40 Hour Famine HQ 24 May

@Chellie - It's up to you! A mate of ours, Mark Cox, last year gave up talking but survived with a notepad - there's a photo of him with his notepad on our Flickr account here. Good luck!

  • Hunter 25 May

I'm gonna give up food for 40 hours. I had my tonsils out not long ago and went for 7 days with no food what so ever, so I think I can get through 40 hours. Might be hard, but it will be more of a challenge for me :)
  • knanna 25 May

im going to give up food, shoes, bikes and talking hope you can do it to, wish the best and rase a lot of money remember 40 dollors 6 people for a month.
  • rosie posie 25 May

I think I'm gonna give up food, shoes, bikes and talking. Now I'm gonna have to walk to and from school - oh well at least im raising money for people otherwise i would not do it. This is the first time i have done the 40 hour famine, i think it will be fun!!!!!
  • Belle 26 May

I did this in grade 8 for furniture. I put my computer on the floor =P Some other ideas are having a disadvantage like being blind, deaf, not using one or both hands or not talking. For something a little different you could wear daggy, scruffy clothes, no shoes and only carry the necessities like bread and water; no Ipods, phones, lipgloss. You could sleep on the floor or in a tent. I’m thinking of doing this, maybe even getting some friends to do it with me. Good Luck!!
  • cLw 27 May

the 40 hour famine rocks. every one who does it is awsome so thx for coming up with it:)
  • sophia 28 May

i think i'll give up every thing. i mean its worth it!!
  • Rachel 29 May

Im giving up all food and drink except water :D
  • timothy 30 May

i am giving up everything listed above and I'm only 10 years old. so give something up and make a difference! Last year my goal was raising $80 but I managed $150. I was only doing furniture as it was my first year because I only then realised how important furniture is. I always remember Liz Burns a missionary in Africa how she gave her life up for the Africans and God.
  • Maddie 30 May

Im giving up furniture and hearing. Ive always wondered what being deaf is like for all those people and in August I will know.
  • Jake 01 Jun

My best friend and i are giving up using legs, and sight. I'm being his eyes, and he's carrying me around for the whole 40 hours.
  • EM 01 Jun

My friends and I are all giving up either food/electricity or furniture. I hope we raise a fair bit of money to help! :)
  • Bek 02 Jun

Im giving up talking for 40 hours. Seems silly but in my job i have to talk all the time and my family and friends know i love to talk. Good luck to every partaking in this year's 40 hour famine.
  • Talitha 04 Jun

im giving up my phone, talking, furniture, computer (except for assignments and study) and food. :S
  • Chloe 05 Jun

Im giving up furniture - couldnt live without it- i will look really weird standing/sitting in class! Hey World Visions support here I come
  • Jessica 08 Jun

Last year I gave up lots of random things. Like instead of walking to the fridge to get a drink, I had to walk a certain distance before I got it, or do 5 star jumps etc. This is just because, many kids have to walk long distance just to get a drink, while we just have it right in front of us. I love 40 hour famine! It's a great idea. :D
  • Tamara 09 Jun

im giving up food and furniture. I would go for technology as well but i dont use it much so its not really a challenge.
  • Allie 10 Jun

My friend and I did freedom last year, by tying ourselves together...very difficult!
  • Laura 12 Jun

Last year i gave up, food, talking, technology, and furniture, no one thought i could give up talking coz im such a chatterbox but i did it and raised a tonne of money for world vision, this year i will do all of those things and mybe also internet and phones!!!! gud luck everyone!!!! :D
  • steph's the best 12 Jun

i am so gonna do the 40 hour famine this year because i really want to help all the poor sick kids over and africa and all the other countries and i am doing all the things food furniture ect
  • Cate 14 Jun

hey my friends and i looking at giving up talkin and food... but we still like to laugh alot can we laugh???
  • steph's the best 14 Jun

its gonna be so hard but for some silly reason i cant wait. i am having a sleepover and we arnt gonna talk so i dont no how thats gonna work awkward LOL
  • Nige at 40 Hour Famine HQ 15 Jun

@Cate - It's really up to you but giving up laughing would be hard if you're having a good time. You can create your own rules about what you want to give up and why, but the real reason is to get an appreciation of what life is like for kids like Lalu, Sami and Sarita who don't have lots of things that we do here. Best of luck!
  • Elizabeth (is awesome) 16 Jun

thumbs i tried it in class its so fun!
  • Rebekaaaah :) 16 Jun

me and my friends are giving up food because thats something that many disadvantaged people don't get and its something we all love.
  • Sarah 17 Jun

  • Christian Blackburn 17 Jun

totally giving up food, technology and furniture!
  • Alex Reynolds 17 Jun

I'll probably give up my voice and processed food..... My parents really don't want me to go without food altogether though :(
  • Chrissi 17 Jun

Im going to try to give up everything! XD I think food and furniture will be the biggest challenge because im not that into my phone, the internet, video games and shopping and I just won't go anywhere that involves using a car on the weekend. I really like the idea of this because it's helps us realize how hard it is for other children and adults who have to live like this forever, not just for 40 hours.
  • Carmen 18 Jun

I'm giving up food and internet... :) I wanna give up my phone...but i need to contact people deuring the weekends...for homework stuff...But i m definately giving up food and internet..
  • Amy =D 18 Jun

I'm going to be giving up food, my mobile and the internet... it's going to be tough but i believe that it'll be worth it.
  • Daynah 18 Jun

Hi everyone. I have got a big group together and we are all comind over to my house for the famine weekend and we are not eating and we are only in Year 7.
  • Melissa 18 Jun

Thinking food, phones, internet and now maybe furniture? The more we give up, the more closer to reality the experience can be.
  • Sandra 19 Jun

I would miss Video Games as I am nerd who loves games. So yea I would definately miss Video Games
  • Kyraa 19 Jun

    I am giving up talking
  • Annelise 19 Jun

Wow, some people have really cool ideas. I think giving up eyesight would be the hardest thing. I'll be giving up a combo of things. I'll be giving up my voice. I've done it before but this year, it will mean so much more because of what I learnt at the GLC. I'll experience what it is like to be voiceless like all those trapped people out there. To make it harder..I may also give up typing, texting and writing. I don't know if I'd survive though. Good luck everyone! <3
  • Molley 19 Jun

Last year me and my best friend gave up talking & had a sleep over but it was still great fun because we allowed laughing. This year I'm going all out (actually I'm just staying in and sleeping) & going without technology, electricity, food, furniture, eyesight, transport & thumbs!! :D
  • Eugene 20 Jun

Hi, im giving up talking. I never shut up and I always have something to say. • kristiaan 28 Jun

how about giving up warmth; blankets, jumpers, heaters etc. allowing people to survive the extreme coldness much like children in third world countries?

  • Charlotte 02 Jul

40 Hour Famine!! I have done this food famine for 5 or 6 years now. And I see everyone is coming up with more challenging ideas! I am defintely going without food, but my family also suggests I give up talking. I'd really like it too as it is a challenge! But I also have a job and I'll be working that weekend at 'Target' is it okay if I talk there as I have too? Cheers,
  • Taylor 03 Jul

no talking and no food . . . i might have to duct tape my mouth
  • Nikita 14 Jul

I want to give up food but are there any specific guidelines or do you make up your own rules as to what you will still eat? Another one I want to do is furniture but again i wonder if there are any specific guidelines? An interesting thing I just though of would be to give up your free will, so I'd probably handcuff myself to someone and then we'd have a sleepover and I would have no free will. It was just something random I thought up. *^_^* I want to help people who can't help themselves, so keep on rocking! We are the people who will change the world.
  • Sas 14 Jul

Why would you give up talking?? Yes you may get money from family members but people you dont know that well and when you door knock aren't going to know that u love to talk and kids and people in 3rd world countrires can talk so do something that they dont have everyday or that they cant do.

Hi Taylah, Sure - your group can mix and match whatever you'd like to give up. There aren't any limitations on it - but make sure that it's something that you'll miss so that you appreciate what those who are experiencing the Global Food Crisis feel every day.

I'm going with out which is going to be a massive challenge alone but I'm also giving up my thumbs, writing, texting and typing. I'm excited to be apart of the 40 Hour Famine again this year. Last year I gave up furniture, it was a breeze.... except in the last hour I was left with nowhere to sit but the floor at the mall as my friends were trying on clothes. It was a massive relief to have my bed back!! Any advice on giving up food and everything else I've decided on ??? Good Luck; lets make a difference x

I'm giving up furniture and technology with some friends cause our mums agree that we are all too young to give up food. I think the hardest thing will be remembering that i'm not allowed to sit down and switch on the tv each morning like i normally do. :) Reading about the disadvantaged in kenya and nepal made me feel so lucky to live in a wealthy country and i think that the people who live with chronic hunger must be some of the strongest people on earth because i certainly couldn't go through what they go through.

  • Nige @ 40 Hour Famine HQ 31 Jul

Wow! So many comments on this post! It's huge! To answer a few q's: @Naomi - You can give up talking at school, just use a notepad and write down what you want to say @ Elijah - Up to you about cushions & pillows, but I think they'd be considered 'furniture' @ Liv - Giving up food really means you shouldn't eat rice, but you can customise the experience as you like. @ kt - Sure, warm things sound like a great idea. Best of luck everyone - check out our ideas on how to stay safe during the 40 Hour Famine here: http://bit.ly/40HF_Safe

Give up sight. Put a eye mask over your eyes and see what it is like to live in a country without an available optomistrist. Or try without a limp. Tie one of your limbs up at the joint. Like it was blown off by a land mine. That would be hard!!!

  • Sophie Heartfield 10 Aug

I started reading all these comments above, and then saw that I wasn't even half way down the page, I am glad to see that so many people are doing the 40 Hour Famine this year! The number of people who do it seems to grow each year :). This will be my 7th year to do the 40 Hour famine, I gave up food each time and it was hard each time. Last year and the year before I gave food and furniture. It was hard but worth it because I raised money for those that need it :). This year I think I'll give up food and furniture again. Good luck and good on ya everyone :)

  • Nige @ 40 Hour Famine HQ 11 Aug

@Missy : You can eat plain rice if you need too - but the traditional 40 Hour Famine is NO food at all, just barley sugars, water or tea. Check out our tips for Staying Safe here: http://bit.ly/40HF_Safe - but really it's up to you. We don't want you to get sick, so if you think you need to eat rice, that's totally cool! @Dawson : A pressure bandage for no hands sounds like fun to us - and yep, you can do only eating fruit if you'd like - see our tips for Staying Safe here: http://bit.ly/40HF_Safe

  • Camp Kirkby 11 Aug

We are doing this as a family venture. We are all giving up electricity and furniture. Electricity also means no water as we are on tank water and rely on an electric pump to get water to the house, so that is a big sacrifice, it's buckets for 40 hours. The adults are going without food and the kids are going to eat bare essentials such as rice and bread only for 40 hours. Perhaps we are over committed but millions go without all these things every day, not just 40 hours. We are looking forward to it. This will be our first 40 hour famine as a family. We are unable to do it on the set weekend so we are doing it the following weekend.

I'm giving up food and talking.. That's going to be difficult because I love eating and I'm one of the most talkative people in existence.

Well i will be giving up food, which is traditional. This is my first year but am very excited about participating. Giving up food is going to be really hard as I have an autoimmune disease and I need so i dont get sick/sore but its worth doing as a few hours of pain does not equal to what others are going through

I'm throwing a sleepover party with my friends to get more people to sign up for the 4HF and collect more money between us :) we are all giving up accommodation and staying on my parents 20 acre property of native bushland and cooking our own food over the fire and walking 5 ks into the closest town for a bucket of water each day :) so far there's 11 people coming!
