Many World Vision child sponsors form bonds of friendship with sponsored children and their families by regularly exchanging letters and cards. In Zambia, sponsored child Angel loves to receive greetings from his sponsor and to learn more about life in Australia.
For a young boy living in a remote Zambian village, Angel knows a lot about kangaroos. This is because of the cards and letters he receives regularly from his Australian sponsor.
“A kangaroo is a strange animal because there is nothing like it in Zambia," Angel explains. "I think the kangaroo is a gentle animal. I would like to hug and play with a kangaroo, it looks gentle and friendly.”
Angel has carefully saved his sponsor’s cards and letters over the years and eagerly anticipates when the next one will arrive. His favourites include the birthday card with the kangaroo and the letter in which his sponsor talked about the family kitten and a trip to the vet.
“I feel very happy to receive the letters and to find out about my sponsor's life,” says Angel. “It feels real when I get a letter from my sponsor; that they are still sponsoring me."
Angel says he writes back to his sponsor and tells them about his good grades and his dream of becoming a doctor when he grows up. “I want to find the cure for AIDS. I want to wear a white coat and have a stethoscope around my neck.”
Angel’s older sister Feomah is also sponsored and she too has kept her sponsor's cards and letters dating back several years. “I want to keep getting letters and cards from my sponsor,” she explains. “I like to hear about their life.”
The children's message to their sponsors is simple: “Keep writing!”
