Opening up economic opportunities for people living in poverty is a fundamental first step in helping them transform their lives. By identifying the ways incomes can be improved, communities can begin the process of wealth creation: an integral and inseparable part of reducing poverty.

What is this about?

Breaking the cycle of poverty is often seen as insurmountable. While there is no single or simple solution, there are proven strategies that help people improve their incomes. And improved incomes mean people can better provide for themselves and their families.

Who is it happening to?

Throughout the world, efforts are being made to eliminate extreme poverty. The World Bank has identified that between 1990 and 2005, extreme poverty fell from 1.8 billion to 1.4 billion. Today, the United Nations World Food Programme estimates that number of people living in poverty has gone down to 925 million people.

Why is it happening?

In recent years, the world has seen formerly poor countries like China and India achieve significant economic growth. As a result, the lives of millions of people in these countries have improved considerably.

Where is it happening?

A key part of World Vision’s work with communities across the globe – in Asia, Africa, South America, Europe and Australia – is supporting the sustainable economic growth of communities. Economic growth means incomes can improve and people can better provide for their families.

What is our response?

World Vision has a long history of implementing programs that empower people to improve their incomes, helping them to help themselves out of poverty. Today, many of our income improving initiatives are recognised as best practice, and our people the subject matter experts.
