Less than a week after Typhoon Ketsana submerged 80% of Manila and nearby provinces - affecting more than 2 million people - another typhoon, "Parma" (locally known as “Pepeng”), has today struck the Philippines.

Parma is packing maximum winds of 120 kph and weather forecasters report it may intensify into a super typhoon.

The number of families affected by Typhoon Ketsana is steadily rising. In some areas, floodwater is up to people’s necks. To date, reports indicate that there over 2,250,000 persons affected, 246 dead and 42 missing. There are 561 evacuation centres housing nearly 80,000 families.

World Vision has already distributed food and non-food items reaching nearly 5,000 people. Additional relief items are being distributed in temporary evacuation centres, including food, blankets, mosquito nets, soap and sanitary items.

A Child Friendly Space has been launched, allowing hundreds of children to play and recover in safety. Three more will be established shortly.
