Japan Earthquake & Tsunami in pictures

  1. World Vision Japan’s relief team is distributing essential supplies including nappies, blankets and bottled water amongst children and families in evacuation centres.
  2. Cars and trucks strewn amongst building debris is all that remains in this community and many others along Japan’s northeast coast.
  3. Snow falls on the coastal community of Minami Sanriku, in Miyagi Prefecture, which was devastated by the 11 March tsunami.
  4. Thousands of people who lived in this community are now sheltering in evacuation centres nearby.
  5. Rescue workers comb the rubble for signs of life five days after the Japan earthquake and tsunami.
  6. The tsunami reduced most buildings to a pile of debris in Minami Sinraku and other communities along Japan’s northeast coast.
  7. Children and families displaced by the Japan earthquake and tsunami shelter in the gymnasium of the Yokoyama Junior High School.
  8. Supermarket shelves are left empty as people who are unsure of what tomorrow may bring stock up on essential supplies.

When a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the north-east coast of Japan on Friday 11 March 2011, it triggered a 10 metre tsunami. The devastation of these two events has been captured here in pictures.
