Greener lives start here

  1. In countries like Chad and Mali, World Vision is teaching farmers how to revegetate their land with indigenous trees.
  2. This solar cooker, provided by World Vision, is helping to reduce consumption of firewood in Ethiopia.

As the impact of climate change intensifies around the world, so does the urgency required to help poor communities respond. The poor are the least equipped to deal with the rapid changes occurring around them.

World Vision is working with local communities to create and implement innovative projects to achieve lasting solutions to environmental problems. Some of these activities include:

  • Reforestation: planting forest and fruit trees in countries like Mongolia and Malawi.
  • Natural re-vegetation: in countries like Mali, Senegal, Chad and Ethiopia, re-vegetation is restoring farmlands and regenerating forests.
  • Sustainable farming: training communities in organic and other environmentally friendly farming techniques in countries like Zambia improves the soil quality which can increase crop yields so families have enough to eat.
  • Moving beyond “rain-fed” farming: training in alternative farming options and introducing drought-tolerant crops in Ethiopia helps to reduce a community’s dependence on rainfall.
  • Energy-saving initiatives: helping communities adopt cleaner and more environmentally friendly fuel sources in Tanzania and Ethiopia, such as energy-saving cooking stoves and solar cookers.
World Vision’s One Earth program offers Australians a way to help fight poverty and climate change together by supporting efforts like these in poor communities.
